Understanding Your Car Insurance

What kind of auto insurance do you have? If you are ever in an accident and need to file a claim with your insurance company—or, to dispute the claim that they provide—you’ll need to know exactly how you’re covered. In this post, the car accident attorneys from I Accident Lawyer will detail five basic types of auto insurance.
Different Types of Auto Insurance
Liability Insurance
If you’re in an accident and it’s determined to be your fault, liability insurance will cover you. Generally, liability insurance will cover the cost of any needed vehicle repairs as well as medical expenses for anyone involved in the wreck. Most states have a minimum requirement for liability coverage, though our personal injury attorneys recommend buying more than that minimum amount, if at all possible.
Collision Coverage
Another type of auto insurance is collision coverage. Basically, if you’re involved in a covered collision, the insurance policy will pay out for the needed repairs. And, if your car is totaled, the insurance policy will pay out the value of your vehicle. Collision coverage is really beneficial to those with newer vehicles, though it is usually not needed for those whose vehicles are older and therefore not very valuable.
Comprehensive Coverage
Sometimes a car can be damaged by something other than a wreck—such as hail, a fallen tree, a collision with a deer, theft, etc. In these instances, comprehensive coverage comes in handy. Comprehensive coverage can indeed cover you against all contingencies, so it’s worth having if there is room for it in your budget.
Personal Injury Insurance
Though personal injury insurance is not available in every state, it’s something our car accident attorneys recommend purchasing if you have the chance. Basically, it covers your medical expenses should you ever find yourself in an accident—regardless of whose fault the accident is. Given how much medical costs can accumulate, this can really be a life-saver (perhaps literally).
Uninsured Motorist Protection
Finally, what happens if you’re in an accident and it’s determined to be another driver’s fault—but that driver does not have sufficient insurance to cover the costs of the accident? That’s when you want to have an uninsured motorist policy, which should offer you a payout in the event that the at-fault driver cannot pay. Even in states that require all drivers to have insurance, this coverage can be invaluable—because of course, not all drivers abide by these insurance requirements.
How Well Are You Covered?
What we recommend: Go through your insurance policy to understand exactly how you are covered. Make special note of the “exclusions” listed in your policy, which are areas you may be vulnerable.
