Street Racing Crash in South Los Angeles Critically Injures 9-year-olds Ashley Gregorio and Delila Rangel; Hit-and-run Driver Sought by Police
SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA (December 14, 2018) – Two nine-year-old girls were critically injured and put into medically induced comas following a street racing crash in South Los Angeles Sunday night. The December 9 accident occurred at Florence Avenue and Hoover Street, according to the Los Angeles Police.
The time was roughly 8:55 p.m.
Reports say that a woman—identified as Jazmin Torres—had been making a turn to the left from Florence Avenue heading west to Hoover Street heading south when her car was struck by another vehicle. The vehicle that hit her—described as a Chevrolet Camaro—had been traveling east, and according to police, the Camaro and a Ford Mustang had been racing at the time of the collision.
Respondents arrived on scene and rescued the woman and two girls from their wrecked car. They transported the victims to the hospital. Reports say that the two young victims suffered major injuries.
One of the drivers who was allegedly racing—identified as Franklin Winbon, a 39 year old—suffered injuries that were serious when the Camaro he was driving crashed.
The person who had been driving the Mustang fled the accident scene. According to Torres, a car hit her and she blacked out. When she regained consciousness, she saw that her car was wrecked and her daughter was unconscious. Torres had been driving her daughter, Ashley Gregorio, and her daughter’s best friend, Delila Rangel.
According to Torres, she did not suffer serious injuries. Both of the girls, however, were in medically induced comas at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Lety Garcia said her daughter, Delila Rangel, suffered an injury to her brain that was serious.
Winbon will face charges that include reckless driving and street racing, police said. Police are offering a reward of $25,000 to find the person who was the hit-and-run driver. A description of the Mustang says it has black rims, a rear wing spoiler that is also black, and a light-colored or tan interior.
Ryan Moreno, who is a detective with LAPD, said they do not have information on the hit-and-run driver, but that the person was aware of how serious the situation was.
