DUI Suspect Involved in Crash that Injures Pedestrians at Bus Stop in Boyle Heights Area of Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CA (February 25, 2019) – A person suspected of driving under the influence was involved in a collision in the afternoon on Friday in which a group of pedestrians was injured in Los Angeles. The crash injured people who had been waiting at a bus stop in the Boyle Heights neighborhood.
The time was a bit before 1:00 p.m.
Reports say that two vehicles—a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Sienna minivan—collided. The impact caused the minivan to leave the road. The minivan then struck two people—identified as two women—who were going to cross the road. It also struck a bus shelter, according to police, that is located beside the Lani Vest Pocket Park at First Street and Chicago Street.
According to police, the driver of the Camry—identified as Joshua Garcia—tried to leave the accident scene. The Camry headed northbound on Chicago Street and struck a person riding a bicycle.
Five people were hurt in the incident, according to investigators. The victims were identified as two women and three men. Their ages ranged from 20 years old to 61 years old. Reports say the drivers were among the number of people hurt.
Respondents arrived and transported all of the injured people to L.A. County+USC Medical Center. The types of injuries the people suffered were described as ranging from moderate to severe. None of the people involved in the incident, except for Garcia, have been identified by name. Their cities of residence are also not known at this time.
According to officials, Garcia—a resident of Montebello—tried to flee the accident site, but Good Samaritans stopped him. Police arrested Garcia on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run. The Los Angeles Police Department asks that if anyone has information regarding the incident, he or she should call Officer Robert Palma or Detective Campos. The number is 213-833-3713.
Investigators are looking into the details, information, and evidence to understand the sequence of events that led to the accident.
