Manard Giles was a 77-year-old resident of Quartz Hill who became an unfortunate victim of a car accident that occurred on Saturday night in Santa Clarita, California. The pastor and two others in his vehicle were driving home from a San Diego church overnight retreat when they were hit by another car traveling in the wrong direction.
Bradford Pate, 38, was driving a 2006 Toyota Tundra and was allegedly drinking prior to the accident on Saturday. He entered the northbound freeway through an exit and traveled south until crashing into Giles’s Chrysler.
The accident is still under investigation, but the California Highway Patrol believes that Pate entered the freeway by Red Rover Mine Road and drove for a few miles before causing the fatal collision.
Giles was pronounced dead at the scene by CHP. His two passengers were taken to the hospital and are both in critical conditions.
The accident also caused a Ride Share van to be struck, which was carrying nine passengers. Two of those nine were treated for minor injuries; and Pate was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to survive.
Pate will face criminal charges for the accident that he caused. CHP has stated that he was under the influence of alcohol and that leads to felony charges since the accident resulted with injured third parties.
According to reports, Giles had just lost his wife of thirty years last year and his family is deeply grieved without the two.
