YUCAIPA, CA (September 14, 2018) – A 1956 Pontiac Wagon went out of control and hit a city monument sign that says “Welcome to Yucaipa”. The September 9 accident occurred at roughly 4:16 p.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
The driver—identified as a man 60 years old and a resident of Yucaipa—had been heading off the exit of the I-10 Freeway eastbound at Oak Glen Road when the vehicle experienced a possible failure of the brakes.
The man attempted to stop his Pontiac by shifting down, and tried to turn south onto Oak Glen Road with the intention of avoiding other vehicles. As the vehicle made the turn, it hit the welcome sign located on the center median of Oak Glen Road.
Both the sign and the classic car had significant damage from the impact. Responders took the man to a hospital in the area for treatment of his injuries, which were described as minor.
