Antonio Pastini Identified as Pilot of Plane that Broke Apart and Fell in Yorba Linda; DNA to Identify Family in Home
YORBA LINDA, CA (February 5, 2019) – Antonio Pastini was identified as the pilot who died when the plane he was flying broke apart and fell on a neighborhood in Yorba Linda on Sunday afternoon. The February 3 accident occurred at roughly 1:35 p.m.
Pastini—who was identified as a 75-year-old resident of Gardnerville, Nevada, and a retired Chicago police officer—had left Fullerton Municipal Airport in a twin-engine Cessna 414A at roughly 1:35 p.m. Ten minutes later, at 1:45 p.m., reports say that the plane broke up while in the air. Parts from the plane fell on an area encompassing Glendale Drive and Crestknoll Drive.
Wreckage from the plane fell on the street and on homes. One house caught fire. Reports say that four victims—who were identified as two females and two males—died inside a house. People who lived in the neighborhood told reporters that the victims had been a wife and husband and the daughter and her husband. The coroner’s office has not yet made a positive identification.
Cory Martino, who is a lieutenant with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, said they believe the victims were attending a party, based on what neighbors said who survived the accident. Authorities will use DNA testing to identify the victims who died in the house.
People who saw the incident said the small plane burst out of a cloud going very fast and then the plane started to come apart, with the tail and wings breaking off. Investigators are examining the details, data, evidence, and circumstances surrounding the flight to find out why the plane broke apart mid-air before crashing.
