Man Struck and Killed by Hit-and-run Driver in Westlake

WESTLAKE, CA (March 27, 2019) – Leonidas Rivas was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver as he was walking in Westlake early in the morning on Tuesday. The March 26 accident occurred on South Bonnie Brae Street, close to West Sixth Street.

The time was roughly 6:19 a.m.

Reports say that Rivas had parked his vehicle on Bonnie Brae Street and crossed the road on foot when a vehicle struck and killed him, according to Felix Padilla. Padilla is a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. After hitting Rivas, the vehicle fled the accident scene. The vehicle drove through a red light where Bonnie Brae intersects Wilshire Boulevard, according to Calvin Dehesa. Dehesa is a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Respondents took Rivas to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. His injuries included blunt force trauma. He was pronounced deceased in the hospital. Rivas was 30 years old.

Police described the vehicle that struck Rivas as a pickup truck, white in color, with a black bed liner. The pickup truck may have damage in the front. Police said they found pieces of the grill at the accident scene.

A description of the suspect hit-and-run driver indicates he is Hispanic, roughly 30 to 35 years of age, and has dark hair combed back. The Los Angeles Police Department released surveillance video in which the vehicle and the accident are visible. Investigators are continuing their work on the case.
