Two men have died after a snowmobile accident near a northern New York reservoir. They were aged 78 and 87. Apparently, the older men drove the machines off some ice and landed in the reservoir.
State police and other authorities say the accident happened around 8 p.m. on Monday night in St. Lawrence County. The town was Parishville and it is located on the edge of the Adirondack Park 140 miles northeast of Syracuse.
The troopers and other officials said that Robert Campbell, 78 years old, and Robert Whalen, 87 years old, were disoriented by blowing snow and horrible visual conditions in general. The fact that they were driving through ice compounded the issue. The terrain was tough and not stable whatsoever. They drove into open water. Two companions on other snowmobiles tried to assist the two men into gaining their foothold, but one, Campbell’s son David, a 56-year-old from Hamlin, fell into the water during the rescue effort. They had used a canoe to get the men into and stable.
The three men who were affected by the accident and rescue attempt were taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital. Campbell and Whalen were pronounced dead once they reached the hospital. The son was treated for hypothermia.
