A transit bus careened out of control on a Southern California Freeway on Tuesday night. The incident turned into a horrible accident that injured eight people, one of them seriously, according to authorities.
The bus was traveling west on the 10 Freeway shortly before 9 p.m. when the driver lost control and the vehicle hit a sound wall, then ricocheted across all of the freeway’s westbound lanes and struck the center divider. This caused serious damage to that particular vehicle. After that the driver got his situation with the near-collision under control, and no other car was involved in the accident.
“She somehow did all of that without hitting another vehicle,” Capt. Dean Hartshorn of the Alhambra Fire Department said of the driver.
Eight of the bus’s 15 passengers were taken to local area hospitals. Seven appeared to have sustained only minor injuries, but one suffered “major trauma,” according to the report by Hartshorn. The passengers’ conditions were not immediately available to the public and the media.
The cause of the accident that occurred in a Los Angeles suburb just east of the city was still under investigation. California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said it was possible the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. It is still unclear if any other issues including drugs and alcohol contributed to the accident.
The accident closed all of the freeway’s westbound lanes for two hours. The freeway was reopened once the accident was cleared and the investigation under wraps.
