A senior citizen ran through a Santa Monica farmer’s market Wednesday. The accident sparked a plea for tougher laws for older drivers.

George Russell Weller said he must have pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, in explanation to the authorities.

Drivers in California, older than 70 years old, must pass driving tests once every five years.

The AARP has made claims of age discrimination though it is not entirely opposed to amended laws.

Baby Boomers are aging. Older drivers will be on the road in added numbers in the future.

There are two states which currently require driving tests for seniors: New Hampshire and Illinois.

Older motorists are involved in more accidents proportionally. Young drivers, under 25, were involved in more fatal accidents.

Driving classes are offered for older drivers. Pete Schneider, the teacher of some of these classes cites several warning signs of aging that older drivers should be aware of:

  • Getting lost
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty merging

are among them.
