Ventura Boulevard Crash Details
July 26th ─ Police are investigating whether a pair of illegal street racers caused a multi-car collision along Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:20 p.m. when the Los Angeles Police Department began receiving calls of a collision in the 20600 block of West Ventura Boulevard near Premiere Hills Circle. Witnesses told Los Angeles Police that 2 of the vehicles involved, a Chevrolet Camaro and a Dodge Challenger, were allegedly racing at high speeds before crashing into multiple other vehicles. Although the collision occurred in a high-traffic area with dozens of pedestrians, none were harmed. The driver of the Dodge Challenger was taken to the hospital in non-life threatening condition. 2 other drivers involved sustained minimal injuries. The driver of the Dodge Challenger claims he wasn’t speeding and that a 3rd vehicle was to blame. That 3rd vehicle, a Chrysler SUV, was described by witnesses as having yielded before entering onto Ventura Boulevard from a side street.
“It was bad, but we did not go 80 miles per hour, nowhere close…and just ‘cause my car looks like it’s a fast car, that’s why they’re saying that,” said Malik Whitfield, the driver of the Dodge Challenger. “I’m with my girlfriend, I’m never going to drive like that crazy in the car with her, to put her in that type of danger,” said Jordan Pope, the driver of the Chevrolet Camaro. Another witness said he was making a left turn onto Ventura Boulevard and was barely missed by the Dodge Challenger flying past him. He said he believed the drivers were going about 100 mph, but that police would determine the exact speed.
Shaun Anastascio, the driver of the Chrysler SUV involved in the crash, said the 2 other drivers were in fact street racing and that is what led to the collision. “There’s no way they weren’t going at an unreasonable speed,” Anastascio said. Police said they obtained surveillance video that appeared to confirm the street racing claim. The investigation continues and authorities say they will hand over their evidence and information to Valley Traffic Detectives and if need be the Los Angeles city attorney for felony charges.
