Suspect Leads Police on Chase From National City to Escondido

ESCONDIDO, CA (December 14, 2018) – A suspect led police on a chase that began in National City and ended in Escondido on Tuesday. The December 11 incident began, according to National City Police, when they received reports that a suicidal woman was in a vehicle on E. 8th Street in the 2300 block.

The time was roughly 1:00 p.m.

According to reports, when officers arrived at the site, the vehicle—described as a Nissan sedan—was departing. In the back seat of the Nissan was a passenger.
The woman who was driving the car did not pull over when officers tried to stop her. According to police, the woman drove onto I-805 heading north, and then took I-15 heading north, traveling in the lanes for carpool.

To stop the fleeing driver, officers from California Highway Patrol placed a spike strip in the area of Rancho Bernardo. The fleeing driver’s vehicle struck the spike strip at a speed of approximately 70 miles per hour, reports say.

The woman’s vehicle lost one tire, and her vehicle reduced speed to roughly 10 miles per hour. She traveled to Escondido, where she came to a stop on E. Valley Parkway in the 700 block in a parking lot.

According to reports, the woman would not communicate with the officers who had surrounded the immobilized vehicle. Officers who were at the scene as it was unfolding said the woman took pills and stabbed herself.

The person who had been a passenger traveling in the back seat left the vehicle a bit after 2:00 p.m. A brief time later, the woman who had been driving left the vehicle and was holding a dog in her arms.

After officers took the dog she handed to them, they took her into custody. Respondents took the woman to a local hospital. It has not yet been reported what prompted the incident, and if the woman will be charged. Investigators are examining if the passenger had been in a kidnap situation.
