Rollover Collision in Spring Valley Kills One Person, Injures Driver and Passenger
SPRING VALLEY, CA (September 18, 2018) – A collision in which a car rolled over on state Route 94 on Monday in Spring Valley killed a woman and injured two others.
The crash, which involved one vehicle, occurred on the highway close to the exit for Campo Road and Sweetwater Springs Boulevard, according to Officer Travis Garrow. Garrow is with the California Highway Patrol.
The time of the crash was roughly 1:50 p.m.
According to reports, the vehicle—described as a 1999 Mercedes-Benz, black in color—was traveling east on state Route 94 when the driver of the vehicle lost control. The car then veered into the divider in the center of the road, and hit the barrier. The car rolled over and was upside down on the road divider, and then landed on the other side of the highway.
CHP says that one of the passengers, identified as a woman in her early twenties, was severely injured. Responders took her to San Diego’s Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she later died. Reports say that the victim had been seated between the passenger and driver on the center console of the car prior to the accident.
The front seat passenger and the driver fled the accident scene. The two people who fled left the severely injured woman in the wreck. Firefighters had to extricate her from the smashed car.
Witnesses saw a man and a woman, both bloody and injured, fleeing on foot across the lanes of traffic that head east. Sheriff’s deputies, officers from the California Highway Patrol, and a helicopter conducted a manhunt, and found the man and the woman hiding in a canyon.
The driver, investigators believe, was Rene Ruiz, a 27-year-old resident of Spring Valley. The passenger who had been traveling in the front seat was identified as a woman from La Mesa, 22 years old.
Officers arrested Ruiz on suspicion of felony counts of manslaughter with gross negligence, driving under the influence of drugs, and hit-and-run. Responders took Ruiz to Sharp Memorial Hospital with injuries that were described as serious. The woman who fled also suffered injuries that were serious. Responders took her to Hillscrest’s Scripps Mercy Hospital.
