Accident in Santa Maria on Highway 101 Kills Woman
SANTA MARIA, CA (August 29, 2018) – A woman died after she fell asleep while driving. The Saturday morning crash occurred at roughly 1:50 a.m. in Santa Maria, on the side of the highway that heads north.
The accident site was close to Jonata Park Road.
Officials from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department said that the woman who died was Jennifer Lopez, a 37-year-old resident of Santa Maria.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Lopez had been going roughly 70 miles per hour at the time she feel asleep at the wheel. Her car began to drift off the road, and struck a sign marking construction.
The impact woke Lopez, according to investigators, and she attempted to move. The car, however, rolled over and struck the divider in the center of the highway.
The force of the crash threw Lopez out of the car. She died from injuries caused by the crash.
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to have played a role, according to CHP.
