Two Separate, Fiery Big Rig Crashes on I-5 in Santa Clarita Cause Damage, One Fatality
SANTA CLARITA, CA (August 15, 2019) – Two big rigs collided in separate incidents early in the morning on Wednesday on I-5, with both rigs catching fire. In one of the incidents, one person was killed. The August 14 incidents occurred in the areas of Santa Clarita and Castaic.
At roughly 5:30 a.m. in Castaic, in an area near Hasley Canyon Road and to the north of it, the first crash occurred. In that incident, a big rig and a pickup truck collided on the freeway’s northbound side, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to reports, the pickup truck was smashed into the rear end of the big rig. The big rig and the pickup truck erupted in flames. One person was reported killed. The identity of the person who died has not been reported. It is not known who was driving the pickup truck, and who was driving the big rig.
A second crash involving a big rig occurred approximately eight miles to the south of the first crash, and roughly 30 minutes later. The second crash occurred on the freeway’s southbound side in the area of Santa Clarita, close to Calgrove Boulevard.
It is not clear why the second big rig crashed, and reports do not make clear if another vehicle was involved. The big rig erupted in flames. The California Highway Patrol said the person who had been driving the big rig was able to exit.
The identity of the big rig’s driver has not been reported, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence. It is not known if the person was hurt.
Investigators are working to gather evidence and information in the two incidents to understand why they happened.
