Michael Shepard—Off-duty L.A. County Fire Captain—Killed in Santa Clarita Crash

SANTA CLARITA, CA (January 24, 2019) – Michael Shepard, who was a captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, died in a crash in Santa Clarita on Wednesday morning. The January 23 accident occurred on the 14 Freeway in the northbound lanes, close to Sand Canyon Road and to the south of it.

The time was roughly 11:20 a.m., Josh Greengard said. Greengard is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.

Reports say that Shepard—who was off-duty at the time of the crash—had been traveling in a Jeep SUV when his vehicle struck the back end of a Caltrans truck. The Caltrans truck was involved in road-sweeping work, reports say.

According to reports, a person who was working for Caltrans had been driving a truck—described as a GMC 3500 pickup that had a dump truck bed—and heading north. The dump truck was traveling in the median in the center of the road when the crash happened. According to Greengard, early information showed that the Jeep hit the back of the Caltrans truck in the area of the median and HOV lane.

Respondents from Los Angeles County firefighters arrived on scene and found Shepard trapped in the Jeep. They worked to extricate him from the wreck. Respondents pronounced Shepard deceased at the accident scene.

Respondents transported the person who had been driving the truck to a hospital. The victim suffered injuries that were described as moderate. The name, age, and city of residence of the victim have not yet been reported.

Shepard was a captain at Fire Station 132, located on Sand Canyon Road not far from the site of the crash. According to the California Highway Patrol, Shepard had been a resident of Agua Dulce.

Investigators from the Newhall-area office of the California Highway Patrol are examining the accident details and information.
