Alleged DUI Hit-and-run Driver and Passengers Injured in Santa Barbara Crash
SANTA BARBARA, CA (February 28, 2019) – An alleged DUI hit-and-run driver and passengers traveling with him were involved in an injury-causing crash late at night on Sunday in Santa Barbara. The February 24 accident occurred on South Milpas Street.
The time was roughly 11:30 p.m.
Reports say that a police officer who was walking out of a convenience store witnessed the incident. According to the officer, a vehicle—described as a compact Kia—had passed by at a fast speed with five people inside. Another vehicle, which reports say had been in a hit-and-run crash involving the Kia, was following it at some distance.
According to police, the Kia skidded as it came up on the roundabout at Milpas, and slid almost a football field in length. It then crashed into the concrete planter in the roundabout. The impact sent the Kia rebounding onto the street.
The officer who witnessed the accident called for assistance. Before respondents arrived, reports say, the officer and the person who had been the victim of the hit-and-run incident helped the people who were in the damaged Kia.
Respondents had to work to extricate three male victims—including the driver and two of the passengers—from the wreck. Two other victims—identified as female—were able to crawl out of the damaged car. Respondents transported all five people who had been in the Kia to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The injuries they suffered were described as catastrophic. The identities of the injured passengers, including their names, ages, and cities of residence have not been reported.
According to Santa Barbara Police, the Kia’s driver—identified as Joseph David Hernandez, 23 years old and a resident of Oxnard—is on probation. He has a DUI conviction. At the time of the crash, he was driving while his license was suspended. Police say Hernanez faces charges that include felony hit and run, methamphetamine possession, and violating his probation.
The identity of the person who was the victim of the hit-and-run incident has not been reported, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence. The type of vehicle the victim was driving is not known from reports.
