Suspect Who Choked Homeowner During Burglary in Santa Ana Crashes Stolen Vehicle While Fleeing
SANTA ANA, CA (April 19, 2019) – A suspect who entered someone’s home and choked a person sleeping there, stole the family’s vehicle and crashed it while fleeing early Thursday morning in Santa Ana. The April 18 incident occurred on West Riviera Drive in the 900 block.
The time was roughly 5:00 a.m., according to Corporal Anthony Bertagna.
Reports say the burglar broke into a family’s home and a dog began barking at him. The suspect threw a chair at the dog. A person who owned the home had been on the couch, sleeping, and was awakened by the noise. The woman tried to flee, but the suspect threw at chair at the victim, according to Bertagna.
The suspect choked the woman and demanded that she give him the keys to her car, which she did. The suspect exited the house by the front door, and a surveillance camera on the home captured the suspect on video.
The suspect can be seen on the video trying to enter a Ford pickup, but the keys did not work. The suspect then ran to another vehicle, described as a car, and stole it from the family. The suspect fled the site.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol saw the vehicle, which had crashed on the 5 Freeway close to Main Street. The stolen vehicle had smashed into the divider in the center of the freeway. The suspect had fled the crash site.
According to reports, video from surveillance cameras shows the man trying to break into the homes at two other locations before the one he entered. Authorities are searching for the man. If anyone has information about the suspect, the number to call is 714-245-8362.
