Car Strikes Guardrail on 55 Freeway in Santa Ana, Killing One Person
SANTA ANA, CA (October 8, 2018) – A car struck a guardrail early Friday morning on the 55 Freeway in Santa Ana, killing one person. The October 5 accident occurred on the southbound side of the freeway, close to MacArthur Boulevard.
The time was roughly 1:20 a.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, officers found the wrecked vehicle and debris in the lanes. The vehicle had significant damage.
A report from CHP indicates that the vehicle had been going at an unsafe speed in the carpool lane in the area south of MacArthur Boulevard. At that site, the lanes for carpool split into two lanes; one lane heads to the 405 Freeway northbound, and the other lane heads to the 55 Freeway southbound.
The CHP report indicates that the driver did not make the change in the roadway condition because of unsafe speed. The front of the victim’s car struck the metal guardrail that divides the two different lanes.
According to reports, the vehicle flipped a number of rotations before it landed on its tires.
Responders pronounced the driver deceased at the accident scene. He was identified as a man from Costa Mesa, 31 years old. His name has not yet been reported.
