Bystanders Push Woman’s Crashed Car Off Tracks in Santa Ana; Save Her from Oncoming Train
SANTA ANA, CA (January 9, 2019) – A collision involving two vehicles sent one person’s car onto railroad tracks in Santa Ana on Tuesday afternoon, and into the path of a train. Two bystanders pushed the vehicle out of the way.
The January 8 incident began with a collision where Lincoln Avenue and 17th Street intersect. Reports say that a vehicle—described as a Pontiac Grand Am—was involved in the crash. A description of the second vehicle has not yet been reported. Following the collision, the Pontiac ended up on railroad tracks at a railroad crossing.
The time was roughly 3:15 p.m.
Larry Kurtz, who is a captain with the Orange County Fire Authority, said an Amtrak train was coming towards the vehicle. Two people who had been near the area pushed the Pontiac off the tracks.
One of the rescuers—identified as Kanwar Singh, a resident of Fullerton—was reported as saying he had been driving home and pulled over to stop and offer his help when he realized the train would hit the car. Singh carried the driver—identified as a woman in her 90s—from the car a short time before the train hit the car’s open door on the driver’s side.
Kurtz said that the woman suffered injuries, and respondents transported her to a hospital in the area. No details have been reported on the types of injuries the woman suffered, nor her current condition. Her name and city of residence have not yet been reported.
Also not yet reported are details about the other vehicle involved in the crash, and the driver of the other vehicle, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence. It is not known if anyone else had been traveling as a passenger in the other vehicle. It has not yet been reported if anyone aboard the train was injured.
The identity of the second civilian rescuer has not yet been reported. It is not known what caused the initial crash, and the factors that led to it. Investigators are examining the details and information to determine what caused the accident.
