Man Critically Injured in Collision on Highway 101’s Cuesta Grade near San Luis Obispo

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (July 19, 2019) – Orion Tyler Ross was critically injured in a collision Tuesday night on Highway 101 near San Luis Obispo. The July 16 incident occurred on the Cuesta Grade, and close to the bottom of it.

The time was roughly 6:25 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

According to the CHP, reports say, Ross had been traveling north in the highway’s slow lane and prior to the collision, his vehicle traveled in front of a another vehicle that was in the fast lane.

The vehicle Ross was driving—described as a Toyota 4Runner—was traveling over 70 miles per hour when the incident occurred, and investigators think he may have been attempting to turn to the left into the Cuesta Summit’s area for brake check.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the person who was driving the other vehicle attempted to stop, but collided with the back end of the vehicle Ross was driving. The force of the collision sent the Toyota rolling multiple times over the other lanes.

Ross had not been using a seatbelt at the time of the incident, CHP says. He was thrown from the Toyota. Ross suffered injuries that were described as critical. People who witnessed the incident stopped to help him until first responders came to the site. Ross’s current condition is not known. He is a resident of San Luis Obispo, and 29 years old.

The person who had been driving the other vehicle involved in the incident was identified only as a man 29 years old and a resident of Paso Robles. He was not reported hurt in the collision.

Investigators are continuing their examination of the details of the crash.
