Collision in Rainbow in San Diego County Kills 13-year-old Boy, Injures Others
RAINBOW, CA (July 24, 2019) – A collision involving an SUV and a big rig on Tuesday afternoon in Rainbow in San Diego County killed a 13-year-old boy and injured others. The July 23 incident occurred on Old Highway 395 where Rainbow Glen Road intersects it.
The time was roughly 4:45 p.m., according to Mark Latulippe. Latulippe is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a Honda Passport—had been traveling east on Rainbow Glen Road. In the intersection of Old Highway 395, the Honda and a big rig—which had been heading north—collided, with the strike occurring on the Honda’s right side.
The force of the collision sent each vehicle swerving to the shoulder on the right side of the road. A light pole was hit, but it is not clear which vehicle struck it. Vegetation on the shoulder caught fire, and spread on the embankment.
A deputy from the San Diego County Sheriff arrived on site to help; however, according to Latulippe, the fire grew toward the Honda. Helping at the accident site were Good Samaritans who had stopped, and pulled the Honda from the fire’s path by hooking a chain to it.
The fire was extinguished by firefighters who arrived on site, according to Richard Berry. Berry is a district captain with the North County Fire Protection District.
Responders pronounced a boy, aged 13, deceased at the accident site. He had been traveling in the Honda. Responders transported a girl, age 7, who had also been traveling in the Honda to Rady Children’s Hospital, located in San Diego. According to Latulippe, the injuries she suffered were described as moderate.
The person who had been driving the Honda—identified as a woman 34 years old—was taken to Palomar Medical Center. The injuries she suffered were described as major. Her name and city of residence have not been reported.
Responders also transported the person who had been driving the truck to Palomar Medical Center. The types of injuries the victim suffered were described as minor. The person was identified as a man 62 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Investigators are continuing their work to understand the circumstances of the crash.
