Vehicle Smashes into Westfield Mission Valley Mall Sign in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA (January 29, 2020) –  Early in the morning on Tuesday, a vehicle that was leaving the I-8 Freeway in San Diego smashed into a sign for Westfield Mission Valley Mall. A passenger was thrown from the impact of the January 28 incident, and the driver was trapped in the wrecked car.

Reports say the incident occurred when the vehicle—described as a Mercedes-Benz—left the I-8 Freeway from the westbound lanes and traveled onto Mission Center Road. According to people who witnessed the incident, the Mercedes was traveling at a fast speed.

The car went into the air, according to witnesses, and smashed into a sign located at the street’s corner with Camino Del Rio North. The impact threw the passenger from the vehicle.

Responders arrived and worked to free the driver from the wrecked vehicle. They transported the driver and the passenger to a hospital. The injuries both people suffered were described as minor.

The identity of the driver, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported. The identity of the passenger has also not been reported.

Investigators are continuing their efforts to collect information regarding the incident to understand what factors contributed to it.
