Man Identified as Motorcyclist Killed in I-5 Crash in San Diego

CARLSBAD, CA (September 13, 2019) – Ryan Martin was identified on Thursday by authorities as the motorcyclist who died in a crash on I-5 in Carlsbad. The incident occurred on Wednesday, on the southbound side of the freeway, close to Buena Vista Lagoon and to the north of Jefferson Street.

The time was roughly 6:45 a.m., the California Highway Patrol and the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Reports say Martin had been riding a BMW motorcycle, and for reasons that are not known, he lost control of the bike. He fell from the motorcycle and landed on the road surface. A vehicle—described as a Ford pickup truck—struck him.

Martin died at the site of the incident, the California Highway Patrol said. He was 19 years old and a resident of Oceanside. Martin was also a Marine.

The identity of the driver of the pickup truck has not been reported.

Investigators are continuing to work to understand the circumstances that contributed to the incident. They are collecting details and information.
