Man Identified as One of Two Victims Who Died Jumping Off Freeway Bridge in San Diego’s Carmel Valley

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 12, 2019) – Ruben Ortiz, Jr. was identified by the California Highway Patrol and the Medical Examiner as one of two victims who died after jumping from a bridge in San Diego’s Carmel Valley. The name of the other victim who died—identified only as a boy 17 years old—has not been reported.

Reports say Ortiz—who was 18 years old—and the other teen boy were killed after jumping off the bridge on state Route 56 that passes over Gonzales Creek. The two victims fell 80 feet.

Two other people also jumped. They were identified as two teenage girls, 14 and 15 years old. According to Jake Sanchez, who is a public affairs officer with the California Highway Patrol, the girls suffered injuries that were described as severe.

The four had jumped after the vehicle they had been traveling in crashed on the road. According to Sanchez, six teenaged occupants had been traveling in a Nissan Altima and heading east when the vehicle went out of the driver’s control.

It struck a guardrail in an area near Carmel Valley Road, and to the west of it. The time was roughly 11:00 p.m. The car ended up blocking one lane of the bridge. Reports say the teens exited the vehicle and started to run to the freeway’s right shoulder.

Four of the people—including Ortiz—jumped over the wall next to the freeway. Sanchez said the victims might not have been aware they were on a high bridge.

Two other people remained on the road and ran from the site.

Responders pronounced Ortiz and the other boy deceased at the site of the incident. They transported the two girls to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Their current condition is not known.

Two other teen boys, 14 and 15 years old, were found by authorities. Investigators learned the boy who was 17 years old had been the driver when the incident occurred, reports say. Investigators are continuing to work to understand the circumstances of the incident.
