Pedestrian Struck in San Diego, Possibly on Purpose, by Driver Fleeing Police
SAN DIEGO, CA (December 21, 2020) – Late in the morning on Sunday in San Diego, a pedestrian was struck, possibly intentionally, by a driver who was fleeing police in a suspected stolen vehicle. The December 20 incident began in Chula Vista.
The time was roughly 11:10 a.m.
A vehicle–described as a Hummer–was suspected to have been stolen from an impound yard. Authorities contacted San Diego Police, who began to pursue the vehicle.
The Hummer crashed at Orange Avenue and Melrose, where a Chevron gas station is located. The suspect left the scene, and drove onto I-5 southbound, according to reports.
The suspect left the freeway at Palm Avenue, reports say. Officers had attempted to stop the Hummer by placing a spike strip down on the ground at the Apache Trailer Park. The suspect, however, drove away at a fast speed and struck a pedestrian who is a resident of the trailer park.
According to reports, authorities believe the suspect hit the victim on purpose while attempting to flee from police, and that the suspect and victim knew one another.
Responders arrived and transported the victim to the hospital. The patient suffered injuries that were described as life threatening. The victim was identified only as 52 years old. The name of the person has not been reported.
The suspected was apprehended by officers, who were assisted with a police K-9. The suspect was identified as 44 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
