4.7. million dog bites occur annuallyin the U.S.

A woman in Riverside was attacked by two pit bulls on Monday and left in serious condition.

According to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services, the victim was out on a morning walk with her dog along the sidewalk in the 4000 block of downtown Riverside’s 6th Street. The attack was reported at approximately 10:50 a.m.

The dogs leaped a fence and attacked the woman, and left her with a gaping wound on her right arm and bite marks on the right side of her face.

Officials reported that a relative of the pit

bull owner rushed to pull the older and bigger dog off the victim. They do not know how the dogs got out, but officials think the larger dog might have forced its way underneath the wood fence.

She was assisted by emergency responders and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Her small dog survived the attack as well.

The dogs—both unaltered males—were impounded by Animal Services officers. The owner later signed them over for humane euthanasia.

According to officials, the adult dog was without a state-mandated license and had not received rabies vaccinations. Both dogs are scheduled to undergo rabies testing at a county lab.

Animal Services Director Robert Miller said “This poor woman was just walking down the street and attacked without provocation. Her injuries are very serious and our thoughts and prayers go out to her as she recovers from these wounds.”

Miller urged all dog owners to be responsible about having proper walls or fences to keep their dogs within their property lines.

According to the American Humane Association, around 4.7 million dog bites occur yearly in the U.S. Nearly 800,000 of these bites require medical care. The insurance industry reportedly pays more than $1 billion in dog-bite-related claims each year.
