Suspects Lead Police on High-speed Chase, Crashing into Riverside Bus Stop
RIVERSIDE, CA (October 16, 2018) – Suspects that were trying to flee from police ended up crashing a vehicle Sunday morning into a bus top in Riverside. The incident began Saturday night, October 13, around 11:20 p.m.
An officer on patrol spotted a vehicle that looked suspicious close to where McKinley Street and Sampon Avenue intersect in Corona. The officer saw three men sitting in a vehicle that was parked in the back of a tractor trailer.
According to reports, the person who was behind the wheel of the vehicle fled, speeding away when he saw the officer approaching. The vehicle with the suspects then got on the westbound 91 Freeway (Riverside Freeway), traveling the wrong way.
According to the Riverside City Police Department, the vehicle was speeding on the freeway’s shoulder, going over 70 miles an hour. It also did not have headlights on.
A helicopter was dispatched to follow the suspects when authorities believed a ground pursuit was too risky. Police said that the helicopter shone a searchlight on the fleeing vehicle so other drivers could see it, to try to prevent a head-on collision with other vehicles.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle then got off the freeway at the on-ramp for Pierce Street, almost crashing into other vehicles. The suspect vehicle ran through a number of red lights on Magnolia Avenue, police said.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle veered to miss a car at the intersection for Tyler Street. The suspect vehicle went spinning and smashed into a bus stop. Police said one of the people who had been in the suspect vehicle ran away. Officers arrested the suspect. Officers arrested the two other susects in the vehicle.
Chad Fountain, a sergeant with the Corona Police, said the driver—identified as Maximino Penaloza, a 19 year old, was charged with at least one felony count of evading arrest.
One of the passengers—identified as Guillermo Serrato, an 18 year old—faces at least one drug-related charge.
The other passenger—identified as Christopher Martinez, a 19 year old—was cited for public intoxication.
