Man Identified as Pilot of Small Plane Who Died in Crash in Riverside House
RIVERSIDE, CA (March 20, 2019) – Melvyn Caffey was identified on Tuesday by officials from the Riverside County Coroner’s Office as the person who died in a small plane crash in the afternoon on Saturday. The March 16 accident occurred on Robinson Avenue in the 10500 block, close to Norwood Avenue, in the neighborhood of La Sierra Acres.
The time was a bit before noon.
Reports say that Caffey—who was piloting a twin-engine airplane, described as a Beechcraft BE50—was heading from Chino to Apple Valley. According to authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration, Caffey had contacted the tower at Riverside Municipal Airport with a distress call. His plane crashed a short time later.
Caffey—identified as 79 years old and a resident of Orange County—had been the only person in the plane when it crashed into the backyard of a house in Riverside. Riverside Police said that four people had been inside the house when the plane came down, first hitting a tree and then crashing in the yard.
According to people who witnessed the incident, the plane was flying very low. They could hear a sputtering sound coming from the engine before the plane crashed. Two Good Samaritans who were in the vicinity of the crash ran to help, but they found the pilot was deceased.
The identities of the homeowners have not been reported, and it is not known from reports if anyone inside the house or on the ground had been injured in the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are conducting an investigation into the causes of the crash.
