Two People Identified as Victims Killed in Charter Bus Rollover Crash on I-15 in Pala Mesa
PALA MESA, CA (February 25, 2020) – Julia Perez Cornejo and Maria De La Luz Diaz were identified as two of the victims who were killed in a rollover crash of a charter bus on I-15 in Pala Mesa. A third woman who was killed in the February 22 incident has not been identified.
Reports say 21 people had been traveling on the bus, which was headed to Tijuana from El Monte. In an area south of State Route 76, the bus slid off the rain-soaked road surface, and went down an embankment.
The accident site was located in Pala Mesa, which is near Escondido and to the north of it, according to Mark Latulippe. Latulippe is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
Autorities from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol identified the victims who died.
Diaz and Cornejo died at the incident site.
Diaz was a resident of Riverside, 67 years old. Cornejo was a resident of Pasadena, 73 years old.
A third woman died at the incident site. She was identified as a resident of Mexico, 23 years old.
Reports say the bus had made a number of stops to pick up passengers in El Monte, Pomona, Riverside, Baldwin Park. The bus went out of the driver’s control on a steep stretch of road, and fell down an embankment.
Responders transported 18 victims to multiple hospitals, including Wildomar’s Inland Valley Medical Center, Temecula Valley Hospital, and Escondido’s Palomar Medical Center.
The victims ranged in age from 5 years old to 75, with eleven of them suffering injuries that were described as major. The child who is 5 years old was taken by airlift to Riverside University Health System Medical Center, located in Moreno Valley. According to Latulippe, the boy suffered a would to his head, which was described as severe.
According to reports, the bus had seatbelts, but few of the people aboard the bus had been wearing them. A number of passengers had been thrown from the bus when it crashed.
The driver was identified as a man from Whittier, 52 years old. His name has not been reported.
He cooperated with the investigation, and authorities do not believe intoxication played a role in the incident.
Investigators are continuing their work to understand what circumstances contributed to the crash.
