Crash on State Route 76 in Pala Mesa Kills Passenger; Driver Suspected of DUI
PALA MESA, CA (June 1, 2020) – Late at night on Saturday, a crash on State Route 76 in Pala Mesa killed a passenger; the driver is suspected of DUI. The May 30 incident occurred on the westbound side of the road, close to Pala Del Norte.
The time was roughly 11:00 p.m., according to Mark Latulippe. Latulippe is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say a vehicle–described as an Infiniti G35–had been traveling west when it went over to the opposite side of the road and into the lane of opposing traffic. The driver was attempting to pass a vehicle, reports say.
According to reports, the vehicle went out of the driver’s control, went into the embankment on the side of the road, and rolled over. The person who had been traveling as a passenger was partly thrown from the vehicle.
Responders arrived and transported the driver and the passenger for treatment at Palomar Medical Center, located in Escondido. The passenger died from his injuries.
He was identified only as a resident of Wildomar, 23 years old. His name has not been reported.
The person who had been driving the vehicle at the time of the crash suffered injuries that were described as major. He was identified as Juan Hart, a resident of Garden Grove, 53 years old.
Hart was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Investigators are continuing to gather details and information regarding the incident.
