Police Officer Killed in Oxnard Crash While Off-duty
OXNARD, CA (January 30, 2020) – On Wednesday afternoon, Nathan Martin—who was a police officer in Oxnard—died in a crash while off-duty in the city. The January 29 incident occurred near the neighborhood of La Colonia, on Third Street between the intersections of Campton Drive and Marquita Street.
The time was roughly 4:00 p.m., the Oxnard Police Department said.
Reports say Martin had been traveling on Third Street on a motorcycle heading east and, in less than a mile after having left the Oxnard Police station, a tractor trailer made a left turn in his path. The two vehicles collided.
Responders arrived and took Martin to a hospital in the area, but he died from his injuries, according to Chief Scott Whitney. Martin was 45 years old. He had served the department 20 years.
The identity of the truck driver has not been reported, including name, age, gender, and city of residence.
Investigators with the California Highway Patrol are continuing their work to gather information to understand why the accident happened.
