Helicopter Crash near Intersection in Oxnard Ignites Grass Fire
OXNARD, CA (May 6, 2019) – A helicopter, which crashed in the morning on Saturday in Oxnard, ignited a grass fire in a field. The May 4 accident occurred close to where North Victoria Avenue and West Gonzales Road intersect.
The time was roughly 9:40 a.m.
Firefighters arrived on scene and found a helicopter had crashed and was burning, according to Sergio Martinez. Martinez is a battalion chief with the Oxnard Fire Department. The pilot had exited on his own before respondents reached the accident site. The man, identified as in his 40s, had suffered injuries to his lower extremities, according to Martinez. The injuries were described as not life threatening.
Respondents took the victim to a hospital. His name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.
Fire officials said crew extinguished a grass fire, which was small in size. According to Martinez, the helicopter may have been involved in a crop-dusting activity, which had been taking place nearby.
No other victims were reported injured in the incident, and it is not known why the helicopter crashed.
Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are looking into the details to understand what caused the crash.
