Two Killed in Santiago Canyon Crash; Three Other Teenagers Injured
SANTIAGO CANYON, CA (May 28, 2019) – A crash in Orange County’s Santiago Canyon early in the morning on Saturday caused fatal injuries to two teenagers, and injured three other victims. The May 25 accident occurred on Santiago Canyon Road, close to Hicks Haul Road and to the south of it, in the community of Silverado.
The time was roughly 2:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a Mazda Protégé—went off the road, traveled through a barbed-wire fence, and smashed into a tree. It is not known from reports why the vehicle went off the road and crashed.
Joshua Morales, the driver, died at the accident site. He was 19 years old and a resident of Santa Ana. Respondents took four other people who had been in the vehicle to hospitals in the area. Colton Mondy, who had been a passenger, was transported to UCI Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries. He was 17 years old and a resident of Garden Grove.
According to the California Highway Patrol, three other people who had been traveling in the vehicle as passengers suffered injured that were described as major. They were identified as Daniel Clark, 18 years old and a resident of Santa Ana; Unique Valdez, 18 years old and a resident of Garden Grove; and Luis Hernandez, 19 years old and a resident of Garden Grove. The condition of the victims has been described as moderate, and critical, though who is in what condition has not been specified in reports.
Investigators are working to understand the circumstances of the crash. At this time, no other information has been reported.
