One Person Dies, Another Trapped in Small Plane Crash in Oceanside
OCEANSIDE, CA (January 30, 2019) – One person died, and another person suffered serious injuries and was trapped in a small plane when it crashed in Oceanside late at night on Monday. The January 27 accident occurred close to state Route 76 and Canyon Drive.
The crash was not reported until early in the morning on Tuesday, when a woman saw the wrecked plane on the side of a hill and notified authorities, according to Tom Bussey. Bussey is a spokesperson with the Oceanside Police.
Respondents arrived on scene and found the pilot was deceased. According to reports, the passenger was injured but alive, and had waited for rescue for over ten hours. Respondents worked to extricate the wounded passenger from the wreckage, and took the victim by airlift to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Bussey described the victim’s injuries as serious. The current condition of the victim is not known.
Reports say the plane went down close to the Oceanside Municipal Airport, and roughly two miles west of it. People who live in the area near the accident site said it was foggy and very hard to see at the time the plane went down.
The identities of the two people who had been traveling in the plane have not been reported, including their names, ages, gender, and cities of residence. Investigators do not know at this time if the plane was attempting to take off or land when it crashed.
According to Jared Foti, who is the assistant manager at the municipal airport in Oceanside, the airport does not have air traffic controllers. Planes come and go without pilots checking in. Reports say that Oceanside Municipal Airport indicated that surveillance footage showed three men were aboard the small plane. The third person had left the plane before the plane made its last flight on Monday at 9:00 p.m.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances, details, and information regarding the crash.
