Fiery Crash in Oceanside on State Route 78 Traps Occupants; Three Killed
OCEANSIDE, CA (November 6, 2020) – A fiery crash in Oceanside in the afternoon on Thursday trapped three people in the vehicle; all died. The November 6 incident occurred on State Route 78 close to El Camino Country Club and El Camino Real.
The time was a little after 2:00 p.m., California Highway Patrol said.
A vehicle–described as a Mitsubishi Outlander–had been traveling on State Route 78 heading west. For reasons that are not known, the Mitsubishi swerved off the roadway, and traveled down a slope.
The vehicle hit a fence and smashed into a signal pole. It then erupted in flames.
Three people were trapped in the burning vehicle. According to Mark Latulippe, who is a public affairs officer with the California Highway Patrol, all three people died at the incident site.
The person who had been driving the vehicle was identified only as a resident of Escondido, 43 years old. His name has not been reported.
A person in the front passenger seat was identified as a resident of Escondido, 56 years old. His name has not been reported.
A passenger in the back on the left side was identified only as a female. Her name, age, and city of residence have not been reported.
According to reports, the only person who had been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash was the driver. Investigators are continuing their work on the incident.
