Crash in Northridge Kills Driver Fleeing Police Pursuit, and Bystander

NORTHRIDGE, CA (July 5, 2019) – Early in the morning on Friday, two people who had been fleeing police pursuit crashed in Northridge, killing the driver and a bystander. The July 5 incident occurred in a parking lot for CVS on Reseda Boulevard.

Reports say the incident unfolded at roughly 1:00 a.m., when officers from the California Highway Patrol in West Valley attempted to stop a Toyota Paseo that was believed to be a stolen vehicle. According to Weston Haver, who is an officer with CHP, the person driving the suspected stolen vehicle began to yield to the stop.

However, when officers came closer, the person driving—identified only as a man in his twenties—left the scene. He began traveling on Reseda Boulevard in a southbound direction.

A pursuit of the vehicle was initiated, which officers abandoned out of concern for the safety of the public after witnessing the Toyota speeding through two lights that were red, according to Haver.

No long after, as officers were traveling on Reseda Boulevard heading south, they discovered the Toyota had smashed into cars that were parked in a lot on Reseda Boulevard near Devonshire.

Responders arrived and took a victim—identified as a woman in her fifties—to a hospital where she died. The woman had been seated in one of the cars that was parked in the lot when it was struck. The woman’s name and city of residence have not been reported.

The force of the crash threw the person who had been driving the suspected stolen Toyota from the vehicle, and he died. His name and city of residence have not been reported.

The passenger who had been in the vehicle—identified as a man in his twenties—suffered injuries that were described as serious and life threatening. Responders transported him to a hospital. His name and city of residence have not been reported.

Investigators are continuing their examination of the details and evidence.
