Man Struck and Killed While Waiting at Stop Light in North Hollywood
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA (June 7, 2019) – Anthony Chay was struck and killed while he waited on a motor scooter at a stop light in North Hollywood. The June 6 incident occurred where Vanowen Street and Vineland Avenue intersect, according to Lisset Fuentes. Fuentes is a lieutenant with the Los Angeles Police Department.
The time was roughly 5:30 a.m.
Reports say Chay had been waiting at the red light on a motor scooter when a vehicle—described as an Audi A4—struck him from behind. According to reports, video from a surveillance camera recorded the crash. It reveals the Audi moving at a fast speed as it travels through the intersection. Reports say the scooter was knocked into the air.
The force of the collision threw Chay roughly three hundred feet from the point where he was hit. Chay died at the accident site. He was 20 years old.
The person driving the Audi—identified as Jessica Martinez, 24 years old and a resident of North Hollywood—continued heading southbound on Vineland, reports say. She struck a number of other vehicles which had been parked on the street. One vehicle—described as an SUV—overturned, and the Audi erupted in flames after it stopped moving.
Reports allege that Martinez left the scene on foot, but bystanders went after her. Her movements away from the site were stopped, and she was later arrested by police. Authorities booked Martinez on suspicion of murder, it was reported. She suffered injuries that were described as minor, and received treatment.
Investigators are continuing their examination of the evidence and details in the incident. It is not known from reports if anyone else was injured. The identities of the owners of the vehicles struck in the incident have not been reported.
