Crash on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach Kills One Person

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (September 21, 2020) – Early in the morning on Sunday, a crash in Newport Beach killed a person. The September 20 crash occurred on Pacific Coast Highway in the 3000 block.

The incident began at roughly 5:35 a.m. in Huntington Beach, when officers pursued the vehicle–described as a Honda Accord, black in color–near Ellis Avenue and Goldenwest Street. Officers suspected the Honda was a vehicle that was reported stolen in the Modesto area.

The suspect driver did not stop for officers, and left at a fast speed, traveling on Pacific Coast Highway. According to police, at times the fleeing vehicle traveled as fast as 100 miles per hour.

Reports say Huntington Beach officers abandoned pursuit due to safety concerns for the high speeds. At some point, Newport Beach police officers received reports the suspected stolen vehicle had crashed on Coast Highway.

Responders arrived and found the Honda had overturned and landed upside down. A person who had been traveling as a passenger in the car was killed, according to Ryan Peters. Peters is a lieutenant with Newport Beach Police.

The identity of the person who died, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.

The person who had been driving the Honda fled on foot from the crash site. Police found and arrested the person. The driver suffered injuries that were described as serious.

Responders transported him to Orange County Global Medical Center. His identity, including name, age, and city of residence, has not been reported.

The identity of the owner of the suspected stolen vehicle has also not been reported.

Investigators are continuing to work on gathering information and details. If anyone has information about the incident, the person can contact detectives with Huntington Beach Police. The number is 714-536-5951.

Anonymous tips can be made to Orange County Crime Stoppers. That number is 855-847-6227.
