Two People Killed in Small Plane Crash Near I-5 Newhall Pass
NEWHALL, CA (March 16, 2020) – On Friday afternoon, a small plane crashed in the hills near I-5 and the Newhall Pass, killing two people. The March 13 incident occurred in an area near Sylmar and to the northwest of it.
The time of the incident was reported as roughly 1:50 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. However, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol said the crash was reported around 2:45 p.m.
According to reports, a plane—described as a single-engine Mooney M20—disappeared from radar as it was en route to Van Nuys airport, Ian Gregor said. Gregor is with the FAA.
Authorities from the fire department received reports regarding the incident, including one from a witness who said a plane looked like it was having trouble with its engine. Another report came from air traffic control. The report said the tower had lost contact with the plane’s pilot.
After a search that lasted hours, reports say, rescuers located the plane close to the Sunshine Canyon Landfill, near where San Fernando Road and Sunshine Canyon Road is located.
Responders found two people had died in the incident. The identities of the two people, including names, ages, gender, and cities of residence, have not been reported. The pilot was not identified in reports.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board sent investigators to the crash site to collect details and information. They are working to understand why the plane crashed, and what circumstances contributed.
