Driver Suspected of DUI Crashes into Pizza Restaurant Full of People in Newhall
NEWHALL, CA (March 4, 2019) – A driver suspected of driving under the influence crashed into a pizza restaurant full of people on Friday afternoon, injuring one person. The March 1 accident occurred on Lyons Avenue at the Ameci Pizza & Pasta restaurant, located near Wiley Canyon Road.
The time was roughly 12:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Reports say the driver—identified as a woman 40 years old and a resident of Sylmar—lost control of her vehicle and it crashed through the windows located at the front of the restaurant. A restaurant patron—identified as a man 69 years old and a resident of Stevenson Ranch—suffered injuries that were described as moderate. Respondents transported him to a hospital in the area. His name has not been reported, nor the types of injuries he suffered. His current condition is not known.
According to sheriff’s officials, the initial tests on the driver showed she had a blood-alcohol level that was almost four times over the legal limit. Authorities booked the driver—whose name has not been reported—on suspicion of felony drunk driving.
According to the restaurant’s general manager—identified as Joseph Maier—the restaurant was crowded at the time of the incident. Investigators are looking into the details and information regarding the crash.
