New Algorithm Could Substantially Speed Up MRI Scans

Posted on November 1, 2011 | Written By: iadminlaw

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) devices allow for scans of the body which can detect abnormalities such as cancer and have been a major boon to medical science.  One difficulty with the technology however, is that it requires patients to lie still for 45 minutes and people with claustrophobia or difficulty remaining motionless can face significant strain.

Recently, new research out of MIT has potentially figured out a way to refine the process which could cut the time required for a scan down to 15 minutes.  The process works by using each wave in the series of body-scans as a baseline to help guide the next.  This significantly cuts down the amount of time required to scan each patient, however compiling the end result requires more time than is needed for a typical MRI. In order to address this problem MIT is currently looking into employing the latest video graphics cards to further enhance efficiency.

It is important to remember that if you have an accident or any serious personal injury particularly to the head or back that you consult a doctor immediately.  Furthermore, should another party be at fault it is crucial that you get in touch with an accident attorney to ensure that you are compensated and treated fairly.
