Vehicle Smashes into Restaurant in National City, Causing Injuries
NATIONAL CITY, CA (August 22, 2019) – In the afternoon on Tuesday, a vehicle smashed into a restaurant, causing injuries in National City. The August 20 incident occurred on Highland Avenue in the 1000 block, at the Pho 7 Cow restaurant.
The time was roughly 2:10 p.m., National City Police said.
Reports say the vehicle—described as an SUV—hit the building, broke through, and came to a stop inside. Two people in the restaurant had been near the wall of glass at the time the vehicle struck it.
Responders arrived and transported two victims to a hospital. They were identified only as an employee of the restaurant, and a customer. The identities of the two people have not been reported, including their names, ages, gender, and cities of residence.
The types of injuries the people suffered, and their current condition is not known.
Also struck in the crash was a large tank containing fish, according to reports. A number of the fish died after the tank shattered.
According to Robert Rounds, who is a lieutenant with National City Police, the person who had been driving the vehicle said to police that she mistook the gas pedal for the brake pedal. The driver has not been identified, including her name, age, and city of residence. It is not known if she was injured in the incident.
Investigators are continuing to gather information regarding the crash. No details have been reported on whether the building’s structural soundness was compromised following the crash.
