Derailed Freight Train Strikes Building in National City
NATIONAL CITY, CA (July 1, 2019) – A building in National City was damaged early in the morning on Monday when a freight train derailed and smashed into it. The July 1 incident occurred on Tidelands Avenue.
The time was roughly 2:00 a.m.
Reports say that as the train was moving north, for reasons that are not known, approximately nine cars derailed. Where all nine cars landed has not been reported, but one of them hit the CNC Electronics West Inc. buildng, located at 1445 Tidelands Avenue.
According to reports, no one was injured in the incident. The train had been empty of cargo when the derailment occurred. No details are known regarding why the train cars derailed, and what let to it.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board will look into the details and information to understand why the accident happened. Inspectors will examine the building for structural damage. The extent of the damage is not known from reports, and it is not known if the building’s safety has been compromised.
The incident led to road closures in the area as crews worked to clear the scene.
