MURRIETA, CA (March 22, 2019) – A driver who was using the 15 Freeway’s right shoulder to pass a big rig was killed Thursday morning in a crash in Murrieta. The March 21 accident occurred on the southbound side of the freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The time was roughly 11:25 a.m.
Reports say the person had been driving on the shoulder to pass the big rig, and crashed into a concrete pillar that supports the overpass for the 215 Freeway. The vehicle—described as a Ford Explorer—erupted in flames.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a person witnessed the Ford traveling in the number 3 lane of the freeway at a speed of approximately 70-75 miles per hour. When the Ford approached the big rig, which was moving slower, the Ford moved into the right shoulder and increased speed to roughly 80 miles an hour. The Ford veered a bit to the right side, and when it came close to the pillar, the vehicle struck it.
Respondents from California Highway Patrol and the Murrieta Fire Department arrived on scene. The person who had been driving the vehicle was killed at the accident site. The person’s identity, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.
No other vehicle was reported involved in the collision. Investigators are conducting and examination of the details and information.
