Man Mourning Robert Melgoza, Killed by Train in Moorpark, is Also Killed by Train
MOORPARK, CA (November 28, 2018) – A man who had been at the Moorpark site where a pedestrian was killed on Saturday by a train, to mourn the victim, was also hit and killed by a train. The November 26 accident occurred in the section of Moorpark known as Virginia Colony.
According to reports, on Monday, a man had been at the site where the previous victim—identified as Robert Melgoza, a 38-year-old resident of Moorpark—had been struck and killed by a train on Saturday.
The man—identified as a 47-year-old resident of Moorpark—had been present with a few other mourners to have a memorial for Melgoza at the place where he died. Melgoza was killed late Saturday afternoon by a westbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. The train had been traveling 70 miles per hour.
The mourners for Melgao were gathered at the site where he died at roughly 11:30 a.m. on Monday. The site is located at near Avenida Colonia, and to the south of it. The place is south of the 118 Freeway, and east of the 23 Freeway.
According to deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, the victim on Monday had been standing on the train tracks to lay flowers for Melgoza. The victim attempted to leave the tracks as the Amtrak Coast Starlight was approaching from the east, going 70 miles per hour.
The man, who has not been identified by name, was not able to leave the tracks in time, and was hit by the train. Responders pronounced the man deceased at the accident scene.
According to deputies, the people on the train were not injured. Investigators conducted an examination of the accident scene.
