Truck Erupts in Flames and Crashes into Front Yard in Monterey Park
MONTEREY PARK, CA (March 19, 2019) – A trash-collecting truck erupted in flames in the morning on Monday, and crashed into a home’s front yard in Monterey Park. The March 18 accident occurred close to where West Verde Vista Drive and South Abajo Drive intersect.
The time was roughly 10:40 a.m., the Monterey Park Fire Department said.
Reports say the truck was on fire when it began to roll down a hill, strike a vehicle that was parked on the road, and crash into the residential property. According to reports, the truck—fully engulfed in fire—stopped moving only feet from the house’s front door.
Scott Kelley, who is a captain with the Monterey Park Fire Department, said the brakes were probably burned out by the heat from the fire. The person who had been driving the truck was able to exit the vehicle. The identity of the truck’s driver, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.
A person who had been working on a transformer nearby said he and others had seen a large fire erupt, and he began recording the incident with his phone. According to the witness, the truck erupted and then began to go down the hill and crash into the home.
The home’s owner, identified as Richard Favela, told reporters that he heard the explosion and saw the truck coming down the hill. The owner of the parked car that was hit by the truck has not been identified, and the type of vehicle has not been described.
Investigators are examining the details surrounding the crash to determine its causes. No other information is available at this time.
