Michael Angelo Gomez-Filippi Seriously Injured by Hit-and-run Driver in Upland
UPLAND, CA (December 13, 2018) – A man who was walking across the street in the company of friends early Sunday morning in Upland was struck and severly injured by a hit-and-run driver. The December 9 accident occurred where C Street and North Euclid Avenue intersect.
The time was roughly 1:30 a.m.
According to Marcelo Blanco, a captain with Upland Police, the victim—identified as Michael Angelo Gomez-Filippi, a 29 year old—had been walking in a marked crosswalk at the time a vehicle hit him. The vehicle was dark in color, reports say. Gomez-Filippi had been out with friends.
According to Stephany Wilson, who was walking across the street a bit in front of Filippi—the street was clear. The light was red, she said, at the intersection to the south of where they were. She said a car kept moving closer and did not stop, even after the car struck her friend. According to the friends who were with Filippi, he was thrown by the impact roughly 45 feet.
Filippi suffered injuries that include a kidney that was lacerated, a shoulder dislocated, broken bones, bruises, and cuts.
Reports say that the C Street and Euclid Avenue intersection has a crosswalk, but no stoplights there or signals.
According to police, footage from a surveillance camera reveals a vehicle that is dark-colored, four door, and may be a Kia. At the accident scene, a piece that broke off a headlight bears a Kia logo. A second vehicle—dark in color—is visible on the video footage, and it is traveling on Euclid Avenue northbound, close to the vehicle that is suspected in the accident.
Investigators would like to talk to the people who were traveling in the second vehicle to see if they have details and information on the driver and vehicle that struck Filippi. The investigation is continuing.
