Man Identified as Person Who Died in Two-plane Collision at Compton Airport
COMPTON, CA (March 22, 2019) – Lukas Michael Swidinksi was identified by the coroner’s office as the person who died when two small planes collided at night at Compton/Woodley Airport on March 13. Swidinksi had been a student pilot when the accident happened on one of the airport’s runways.
The time was roughly 7:00 p.m.
Reports say the collision occurred on Runway 25L. One plane—described as a North American T28—crashed into another plane—described as a Cessna 152. Inside the Cessna were a student pilot and a flight instructor.
According to Ian Gregor, who is with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cessna landed on the runway first, followed by the North American T28. He said the North American T28 landed, and ran into the other plane. The impact caused the Cessna to explode. According to Gregor, one person had been on board the North American T28, and two people had been on board the Cessna.
Swidinski was forty years old, and a resident of Long Beach.
The sheriff’s department said the second person who had been on board the Cessna was the flight instructor, a man in his 30s. Respondents transported the victim to the hospital. His condition was described as critical.
According to the sheriff’s department, the person who had been piloting the North American T28 was not hurt. The identity of the T28’s pilot, including the person’s name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are examining the details and evidence to understand the circumstances that led to the crash.
