Two Young Sisters Walking to School are Hit by Truck in South Los Angeles; Marlene Lorenzo Killed, Amy Lorenzo in Critical Condition
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 5, 2019) – Two young girls who were walking to school in the morning on Thursday in South Los Angeles were hit by a truck. The 14-year-old girl died, and her sister, who is 12 years old, is in critical condition. The April 4 accident occurred on Broadway Place near 37th Street.
The time was a bit before 8:00 a.m., Jeff Lee said. Lee is an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department.
Reports say the two sisters—who relatives identified as Marlene and Amy Lorenzo—had been walking in Los Angeles’ South-Central neighborhood on their way to school. A truck, which was turning from 37th Street to Broadway Place, hit them, according to Lee.
Moses Castillo, who is a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, said that after the girls were hit, they went under the vehicle and were dragged. Respondents took the injured sisters to a hospital. Authorities said Marlene was pronounced deceased. No details have been reported on Amy’s injuries. Her condition was described as critical.
According to Lee, the person who had been driving the truck said he felt a bump. The driver stopped the truck, and discovered he had struck the two victims. A fellow student of the two sisters saw the accident and began screaming, police said.
The truck’s driver stayed at the accident site and cooperated with the investigation. His name, age, and city of residence have not been reported. Investigators are looking into the details, and seeking to understand the circumstances surrounding the accident.
